Essential Oil Rug Deodorizer!
Guys, I'm excited about this. I was sitting on my living room rug today with my daughter, and realized how much the rug smelled like dogs. I love my dogs, but I don't want my house to smell like them - or any house, for that matter. So, I looked up a DIY essential oil rug deodorizer recipe, and made up a batch.
The recipes I found all called for 1 cup of baking soda and 5 drops of essential oil, so I chose two essential oils, lemon and malaleuca, because lemon just smells amazing for cleaning and has antibacterial properties, and melaleuca helps protect against environmental threats when used for cleaning, then went with an even 6 drops. After adding the drops to the baking soda, I used a fork to mix it all together.
It took me all of 2 minutes to gather the ingredients and put it together, and then I sprinkled it on the rugs, let sit for about 10-20 minutes, and vacuumed it up. I immediately felt like I did something awesome for myself and my daughter by cleaning with a product I know will not harm her, or in any way effect this growing baby inside of me! As far as the smell, I am no longer avoiding contact with the rugs in my home, so I'd call this DIY cleaner a success, especially once I did the math for the cost per cup:
Cost:
1 cup of baking soda = $0.27 (if buying the 13.5 lb bag from Costco)
3 drops Lemon Essential Oil = $.12
3 drops Melaleuca Essential Oil = $.24
Total cost per cup = $0.63
Let's compare that to regular store-bought baking soda rug deodorizer - which I found for $14.63 for two lbs. Using the same math (a 1 lb box of baking soda is 806 servings, each serving is 1/8 tsp), then the cost per cup of rug deodorizer is $3.49!!
If you're interested in purchasing these oils, I'd love to hear from you with any questions!
