Mom's Office.
I can't knock down walls and paint this house (I apparently miss that?!), so I'm moving on to planning some re-dos for my parents....This is a planning post; a completed office for my mom probably won't happen for a while. Patrick and I still live an hour away, and considering this was my idea, my sisters are pretending the project doesn't exist, so getting help to do this might be slightly difficult. However, I need a plan to start a project. Consider yourself lucky I don't post Gantt charts and delegate roles and responsibilities in this post (please thank my inner engineer for this sentence).
I get my love of garage sales from my mom. It's from her that I learned to love both the new and the old, and that giving a fresh life to something vintage is fun and makes you love that piece even more. I also love the look of clean, fresh, white lines... so I think this project will turn into an eclectic, comfortable space. This project is personal to me - she is turning my old bedroom into her office - so I want to make sure she will love it, while also breathing into it a bit of "Anna".
Some of my mom's requirements/wants:
- The room still needs a place for guests to sleep. Like an extra two rooms isn't enough, the unrelenting mom in her needs to make sure there are plenty of extra beds to go around. Reasonable, and already solved with a $70 pull-out couch off Craigslist.
- To get to this room, you have to walk out onto the patio and enter through a huge set of sliding glass doors. The room is mostly windows, so there has to be some privacy if guests stay in that room.
- She needs filing cabinets (this could be solved with a few days, some backup storage, and a scanner, but you know how moms are....).
- Bookshelves
- A desk with drawers for easy access to commonly needed items like pens, etc.
- A desk big enough to have her computer & whatever else she's working on.
- My mom mentioned that her mom used to have aztec rugs that she loved, so I really want to incorporate some sort of aztec/kilim rug into the space.
- light teal/aqua walls
The major challenge with my old room is that it is TINY. Like, really, really small. So small it's difficult to take pictures of it. Incorporating everything she wants is going to take some finesse.
Are you really surprised my room at home is super-amazing turquoise? It's the same color I painted my laundry room at our Panama City house. I didn't realize it was the exact same color until after the fact.
I think I've already found the perfect color from this office reveal. I know there is also a pretty greenish Sherwin Williams version of the aqua color I painted in our living room, but I have to remember the name of it.
My sister had an idea to make a picture wall above where we'll be putting the couch with all the places we've lived. Some history on my family, we moved 14 times in 8 years, but finally settled down and my parents have lived in their current house since 1995... so let's just assume this wall include most of the places we've lived. Point being, I want a good eclectic feel to the pictures, so when I came across this picture gallery, I thought the feel of it is just about perfect.
My mom and I both loved the feel of this office space. She liked how there was bookshelf storage in the desk, and I like the clean bookshelf design and the awesome random hand on the wall with the splash of color.
